Project Overview:
No matter how many projects you attend, each is a different experience, so you never know quite what to expect. Here is some information of what to expect when you are working with people you have never met before.Briefing:
Once all (or most) of the participants have arrived, the project director will brief the group on the current conditions of the places you will be working in and will discuss any available resources and medications that can be used to treat the patients. He or she will also discuss the more common diseases that you may be treating and will warn you about any cultural differences that you may encounter, so that you can begin your relationship with the people more smoothly.
Your Purpose:
The medical and project directors will assign your role by matching your skills and training to the needs of the project. Non-medical volunteers will serve as General Helpers in various areas.
Every Day:
Mornings will begin with a devotional after breakfast. Some teams may offer optional early morning prayer times. In the evenings, you will enjoy fellowship and relaxation with other team members. Often, the local people will invite you to their homes. Please let the director know if you plan to accept any invitations and be aware that the food offered to you by the locals is cooked in very humble settings and you may be exposed to unfamiliar bacteria if you do not employ caution.
Medical Dental Clinics:
Medical directors work tirelessly to coordinate everything before the project begins to ensure that necessities are available. Our days are long and hard, as every team tirelessly attempts to help as many patients as possible during the week.
Weekends:
There will be opportunities for sightseeing and shopping, generally as a group activity. During your briefing and as the week develops, you will be informed of what is available in the particular area you are visiting. Sunday morning worship services may be planned, or you may have the opportunity to visit local churches.
Accommodations:
We make every effort to provide a clean and safe environment for IMA participants, although accommodations are very modest! Be prepared for anything and everything and remember to be flexible and thank God for everything that you have!
Patients:
The people we serve have almost always been mistreated (or not treated by any physicians at all). The care we offer is usually all that is available to them. We minister to the patients as we treat their medical needs.
Therefore:
Pray for the medical/project director as he or she faces the many challenges of organizing these trips.
Pray for all the participants in the project, that they have safe travel and good health.
Pray that all the supplies, equipment and medications get to the site intact.
Pray for our patients and their families.
